FOR DAN CANDIDATES
This is what you need to know. This page summarizes the Dan and Poom Examination Regulations. Please read the full regulations before you register; if anything here differs, the regulations apply.
Member of Swiss Taekwondo for at least 3 years and of a Swiss Taekwondo club. With fewer years, you need proof of previous membership in another WT national federation. Kukkiwon TCON requirements also apply; non-Swiss citizens may need proof of residency.
Your Dojang official recommends you and confirms your registration.
You meet the minimum age and waiting period for your grade (table below). The waiting period counts from the date of your last successful Dan exam with a Kukkiwon or SKKO-accepted certificate. You must be at least 10 years old (by birth year) to take part.
Up to 6th Dan, each grade has a mandatory course (table below). Recommended, but not required: a competition referee seminar in the year of the test or the year before, and at least three training sessions of 60 to 90 minutes per week (or 156 hours per year). Further recommendations per grade are in Appendix 3 of the regulations.
From 2nd Dan: a copy of your current Dan certificate. Only Kukkiwon certificates count toward a higher grade; if yours is not from Kukkiwon, contact SKKO.
A long-term injury or permanent physical issue? Submit a medical certificate so the experts can assess you fairly.
Poom is the grade for candidates under 15. From age 15, Poom holders can apply to convert to the matching Dan. Low Dan (1st to 3rd): 15 days tolerance before or after the reference date. High Dan tests (4th Dan and up) need at least one official external Kukkiwon expert. For 5th and 6th Dan, the regulations also list running your own Dojang, being a responsible instructor or being active within the federation. For 7th Dan, the regulations only set the waiting period and minimum age.
NOW
Your Dojang official needs to recommend you. Check your waiting period, your mandatory course and that your Mudopass is valid.
BEFORE THE DEADLINE
Register in the Swiss Taekwondo member area. Your club confirms the list of registered candidates.
DOCUMENT DEADLINE
Online: digital Mudopass photo, TCON number (if you have one), copy of your Dan certificate (2nd Dan and up), medical certificate (if needed) and your written paper as PDF with your surname, first name and date of birth. Late or missing files mean no admission.
10 DAYS BEFORE
Swiss Taekwondo sends you an invoice. Pay it at least 10 days before the test.
TEST DAY
Arrive on time with your ID, assistants and gear.
BY THE NEXT DAY
Passed? Pay the Kukkiwon certificate fee right after the results, at the latest the following day.
Inappropriate or disruptive behavior means immediate exclusion, and the test counts as void.
Registration · Opening by the head examiner · Warm-up (on your own) · Basics (Kibon Dongjak) · Poomsae · Hanbon Kyorugi and Hosinsul · Target hitting (30 s) · Kyorugi with protective gear (depending on age) · Kyokpa · Results · Photos
Each discipline is scored out of 100; 60 points is a pass. You pass when the majority of experts pass you in every discipline. Failed only one discipline? SKKO may let you retake just that one at the next test. The experts' decision is final; they explain a negative result on request. A result can only be annulled for a demonstrable error by Kukkiwon or the organizer.
You get the exam fee back if the organizer cancels, if you withdraw during the registration period, or with proof of injury, serious illness or pregnancy at least 3 days before. No refund if you fail, and if you retake the test, the fees are due again.
Within 5 days of the results, you can ask in writing to see your individual results. Your promotion is only valid once Swiss Taekwondo confirms it in writing.
A small circle of spectators is welcome. Please no food or drink during the test, and save the applause for the end. The organizers take photos and video; ask before the test if you want them (a contribution may be charged).
