The Heart of Traditional Taekwondo
Recognized Poomsae represents one of the core disciplines of Taekwondo, focusing on the precise execution of standardized forms that reflect the art’s deep technical and philosophical roots. Practiced and performed in dojangs and arenas around the world, it is an official competition category governed by World Taekwondo (WT) and endorsed by Kukkiwon, the global Taekwondo headquarters.
What Is Recognized Poomsae?
In Taekwondo, poomsae are choreographed patterns of defensive and offensive techniques, symbolizing combat against one or multiple imaginary opponents. Recognized Poomsae refers specifically to the standardized forms defined by WT and Kukkiwon, such as Taegeuk Il Jang through Pal Jang and the higher Dan-level forms (e.g. Koryo, Keumgang, Taebaek).
Athletes are judged on:
Accuracy (technical execution of stances, blocks, strikes, and transitions)
Presentation (speed, power, rhythm, expression of energy or “sihak”)
Balance, posture, and control
Recognized Poomsae requires both physical excellence and deep mental focus. It is a discipline where every movement reflects years of practice, inner discipline, and understanding of Taekwondo principles.
Global and Olympic-Recognized
Recognized Poomsae is a prominent event in major international competitions such as the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships, Continental Championships, and Universiades. It is also featured in the World Taekwondo Grand Prix series for Poomsae and in multi-sport events like the Asian Games. While not yet part of the Olympic program, it is officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a competition format under the governance of WT.
The discipline includes individual, pair, and team categories across age groups and belt levels. Internationally, it is becoming more inclusive, with divisions for masters, cadets, and para athletes as well.
