Beach Taekwondo - A New Arena for Expression and Sport
The world of Taekwondo continues to evolve, and one of its most exciting recent innovations is the Taekwondo Beach Games - a vibrant celebration of martial arts, athleticism, and creativity in a natural outdoor setting. World Taekwondo (WT) has developed Beach Taekwondo as a way to bring the sport to outdoor settings and attract a younger audience. It features relaxed uniform codes, allowing for more customized gear, and provides an additional championship for poomsae athletes.
A New Kind of Stage
The Beach Games are held in coastal locations around the world and feature a wide variety of disciplines adapted for outdoor performance. Central to the event is Freestyle Poomsae, which allows athletes to combine traditional techniques with music, acrobatics, and artistic expression - as well as Recognized Poomsae. Additionally other disciplines include technical breaking, free style dynamic kicks and team demonstrations
Switzerland Joins the Sand
While Switzerland does not yet host its own national Beach Games, the Swiss National Poomsae Team proudly participated in the 2025 Taekwondo Beach Games held in Portugal this June. The team delivered strong performances and gained valuable experience in this unique format, standing alongside athletes from across the globe.
Their participation marked a first step toward integrating this exciting dimension of Taekwondo into the Swiss sports landscape. The success and energy of the event sparked enthusiasm within the community, and conversations are already underway about potential beach events in Switzerland in the future.
A Global Movement
Taekwondo Beach Games are part of World Taekwondo’s broader vision to make the sport more visible, inclusive, and appealing to youth and new audiences. They align with Kukkiwon’s educational mission to promote Taekwondo as a way of life that adapts to modern realities while preserving its core values.
