Silver for Luis Sanchez: Swiss Poomsae Team Continues Strong Start to the Season in Sofia
Just one week after their impressive showing in Wiesbaden, the Swiss poomsae squad travels to Sofia and returns with another silver medal — this time from Luis Angel Sanchez in the U50 category at the Bulgarian Open G2.
On March 1, the Swiss Poomsae national team was back in action at the Bulgarian Open Poomsae 2026 in Sofia — a prestigious G2 World Ranking event held at the Arena 8888 Sofia, attracting top talent from across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Coming just one week after the German Open G1 in Wiesbaden, it was a quick turnaround that tested both form and resilience.
U50 — Luis Sanchez Claims Silver
The headline result came from Luis Angel Sanchez, who won the silver medal in the U50 Men Individual category. After narrowly missing the podium in Wiesbaden, Sanchez delivered when it mattered most at the higher-ranked G2 event — a significant step forward and valuable ranking points on the road to the World Championships.
Junior — Building on Wiesbaden Momentum
Fresh off their silver medal at the German Open, the Junior Mixed Pair of Nayeli Hoener and William Helsen continued their strong partnership with a 5th-place finish out of 13 pairs. In the individual categories, both showed they belong at this level: Nayeli placed 17th out of 44 in Junior Women, while William finished 17th out of 32 in Junior Men
.
U30 — Solid Results Across the Board
Maria Chavanne led the U30 individual results with a 9th-place finish in a deep field of 54 women. Kyra and Mathieu both placed 17th in their respective categories (U30 Women, 54 athletes, and U30 Men, 46 athletes). In pairs, Mathieu and Liv earned a strong 5th place out of 19 in U30 Mixed Pair.
Team — A Tough Draw
The women's team of Kyra, Liv, and Maria faced a difficult first-round opponent in Malaysia, one of the strongest poomsae nations in the world. Despite a spirited performance, the Swiss trio couldn't advance — but the experience of competing against that calibre of opposition at G2 level is invaluable for the team's development.
Two G-Ranking Events, Two Medals
With a silver medal at both the German Open G1 and the Bulgarian Open G2 in the space of just eight days, the Swiss poomsae team has made a powerful statement to open the 2026 season. The combination of podium results and consistent top-20 finishes across categories shows a squad that is growing in depth and confidence.
