Freestyle Poomsae in Motion: A New Phase Begins
Dear Swiss Taekwondo Community
Since 2023, an energetic and passionate team has been working hard to lay the foundation for Freestyle Poomsae in Switzerland. Today, we are excited to reflect on what has already been achieved and share what’s next in this dynamic journey.
Honouring the Foundational Work
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the initial development team for their tireless work and vision:
- Thomas Viguier (Project Lead)
- Kenneth Jannash
- Mehdi Amhand
- Sophie Flury
Their contributions created the solid base from which Swiss Freestyle Taekwondo can continue to grow and thrive.
Review of the 2024–2025 Development Phase
Over the past year, the team accomplished a great deal:
- 10 national workshops and seminars with guest instructors from Austria, Spain, South Korea, France, and Switzerland
- 40 promotional videos and around 60 instructional clips on freestyle techniques and elements
- An extensive digital archive featuring rules, safety guidelines, and training materials
- Integration of Freestyle categories into competitions like the Schaffhausen Open 2025
- A collaboration with Triple J, a leading Korean freestyle club, to build a structured progression system
- A supply partnership with Alder + Eisenhut, giving all Swiss Taekwondo clubs 12% off on Freestyle gear and other products

Looking Ahead: New Structures & Clear Goals
With momentum strong, we are entering the next phase of development, guided by short-, medium-, and long-term goals:
Short-Term (2025)
National Freestyle Team: Launching this year, the team will train collectively and represent Switzerland at key national and international Poomsae competitions.
Freestyle Competence Centre in Bern: This new hub will centralize resources, host workshops, and coordinate the growth of emerging talent.
Medium-Term
- Standardized Training Programme: A structured, nationwide syllabus is in development to help clubs introduce Freestyle Poomsae with confidence and quality.
- Expanded Video & Coaching Resources: New tutorials, coaching tips, and high-level performance breakdowns will continue to grow our digital library.
- Club Support: Swiss Taekwondo will assist dojangs in integrating Freestyle through training guidelines and ongoing consultation.
New Coordination Team
As part of this new phase, a Bern-based Freestyle Coordination Team will oversee daily operations, support, and development:
- Ainsley Smart
- Viola Braun
- Steve Po
This team will serve as key contacts for clubs, coaches, and athletes, supporting both grassroots and elite development.
Together, we look forward to pushing Freestyle Poomsae in Switzerland to new creative and competitive heights - one kick, one spin, one innovative idea at a time.
