From 7 to 21 October 2025, thirteen athletes from the Swiss Kyorugi National Team took part in an intensive training camp at Beijing Sport University (BSU) under the guidance of National Coach Peer Steinkellner.
The camp opened with several days of demanding sessions filled with focus, team spirit, and determination. Athletes pushed their physical and mental limits, gaining valuable experience in a professional, international training environment.
On 15 October, the Swiss delegation was officially welcomed by BSU President Mr Zhang Hongwei and Vice President Mr Qiao Liang. The visit included a campus tour and a joint lunch with Mr Walter Mungisen, former STV Director at BASPO, who has long maintained a close partnership with BSU. The meeting offered new perspectives for future collaboration between Swiss Taekwondo, BSU, the Chinese Taekwondo Association, and the Beijing Taekwondo Team.
Among the distinguished guests was legendary Ms Chen Zhong, double Olympic Champion (+67 kg, 2000 and 2004) and one of the most decorated Taekwondo athletes in history, whose achievements continue to inspire athletes around the world.
Between training sessions, the team explored Beijing’s cultural landmarks, from the Great Wall and the Summer Palace to the lively streets of the city, and enjoyed authentic Chinese cuisine. The local hotpots and Peking ducks quickly became team favourites.
Coach Peer Steinkellner was also invited to conduct a special two-day training for the Chinese Junior National Team, which was extended to three days thanks to the strong exchange and mutual respect between the teams. The sessions focused on sparring techniques, strength development, and tactical refinement, and laid the groundwork for ongoing cooperation between the Swiss and Chinese federations.
Reflecting on the experience, Coach Steinkellner shared: “This camp was an incredible opportunity for our athletes to train and grow in a world-class environment. The openness and professionalism of our Chinese hosts created a truly inspiring atmosphere. We returned home stronger — not only as athletes but also as a team.”
The camp concluded with an interview at BSU and a final day of well-earned rest and sightseeing. The Swiss team returned home with new knowledge, international experience, and strengthened partnerships that will contribute to the continued development of Swiss Taekwondo on the global stage.
