From June 2025, the beach town of Nazaré, Portugal, became the stage for the 2nd Open Beach Taekwondo Championship, bringing together more than 380 athletes from across Europe and beyond. The Swiss National Poomsae Team, invited as a guest nation, proudly took part in this dynamic and fast-growing competition format.
With strong winds, golden sand, and international flair, the Swiss athletes delivered a series of outstanding performances in both individual and team freestyle poomsae, earning multiple gold medals and podium finishes.
Swiss Highlights from Nazaré:
The Swiss delegation, led by national poomsae coach Maria Gilgen, stood out not only for its results, but also for its team spirit and professionalism. Competing as invited guests, the Swiss athletes embraced the unique format of Beach Taekwondo, which emphasizes creativity, synchronization, and athleticism in a natural setting.
“We are incredibly proud of our athletes. They showed that Switzerland can compete and lead in the evolving freestyle and beach formats of our sport,” said Maria Gilgen.
The Beach Taekwondo format, supported by World Taekwondo, continues to gain momentum worldwide, offering new opportunities for youth, teams, and freestyle specialists. Switzerland’s strong showing in Nazaré demonstrates its growing presence and leadership in this exciting discipline.
